Does UKC recognize bullies? ›

While these breeds were utilized in the creation of the American Bully, it is a breed of its own and should not specifically resemble any one in particular. The American Bully breed was recognized by the United Kennel Club on July 15, 2013.

A Kalamazoo, Michigan-based company founded in 1898, United Kennel Club is the largest all-breed performance-dog registry in the world, registering dogs from all 50 states and 25 foreign countries.

Ownership of American bully XL dogs is restricted under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991. Since 1 February 2024, it has been a criminal offence to own an XL bully without an exemption certificate. The government said it received 61,000 exemption applications before the deadline.

Over decades, the pit-bull terrier developed the ability to attack suddenly, and sustain grave injuries without retreating. This genetic history is present in the XL Bully. “These dogs, being bred for aggression, are likely to inherit aggression,” says David Sargan, a geneticist at Cambridge Veterinary School.

The United Kennel Club (UKC), the second largest registry of purebred dogs in the United States, does recognize the American Bully, delineating three main varieties of Bullies based on height at the withers: pocket, standard/classic, and XL.

In 2008, the American Bully was recognized by the European Bully Kennel Club (EBKC), and on July 15, 2013, by the United Kennel Club (UKC). The UK Kennel Club, American Kennel Club, and International Canine Federation do not recognize the American Bully as a separate breed.

Today, the American Pit Bull Terrier continues to demonstrate its versatility, competing successfully in Obedience, Rally Obedience, Tracking, Agility, Lure Coursing, Dock Jumping and Weight Pulls, as well as Conformation. The United Kennel Club was the first registry to recognize the American Pit Bull Terrier.
