Both the 153bhp and the 123bhp versions of the mild-hybrid 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine are capable of around 50mpg in official tests, which is around 6mpg more than the 1.0-litre Nissan Juke can manage, and on a par with diesel efficiency.

Ford hasn't revealed what battery sizes will be used in either the E-Transit Courier or Puma EV, but based on the powerpacks used by similar sized EVs, a 50-60kWh battery would be ample for a range of 250 miles or more.

Generally the Puma is a great bit of kit, but living with the car and working it hard have highlighted a few small issues for me. Thanks to the small 42-litre fuel tank, the driving range is only just over 400 miles, which can often be less than half my weekly mileage.

The performance ST model still achieves decent economy, with a WLTP-tested figure of 42.8mpg, although CO2 levels are a little higher at 148-151g/km. The Puma isn't too heavy, so the 155bhp engine does a decent job, especially as it's torquey and quick-witted. The mild hybrid system actually adds less weight than substituting a bigger engine would have. It's worth revving high as the power keeps swelling toward 6,400rpm, but unfortunately so does the noise.

With proper maintenance and care, a Ford 1.0 EcoBoost engine can last for many miles. Some owners have reported exceeding 100,000 miles or more without major issues. However, factors such as driving conditions, maintenance practices, and individual driving habits can affect engine longevity.
